Apple Crumble
Ingredients
- apples (think one to two apples per serve, depending on their size)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar per 4 apples
- lemon juice
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/4 cup ground almonds
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup oats
- 125g chilled butter, cut into very small pieces (about 1cm)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C.
- Peel and core apples then slice them. I usually quarter them lengthwise then halve them crosswise first, so the slices aren’t too long. Put the apples into a pot with the granulated sugar and a good squeeze of lemon juice, stir well and place on a low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, until they are nicely softened but not mushy. Set aside to cool a bit.
- Mix the flour, ground almonds, oats and sugar in a bowl. Add the butter and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. You want it a bit lumpy, but with no big bits of butter left. If you’re not going to bake your crumble straight away, put the mixture in the fridge until you’re ready to use it.
- Put the apples into well-buttered dish (the depth will depend on how many apples you used – for the crumble in the photo, I used 4), smoothing the surface a bit and pressing very lightly to fill any big gaps.
- Bake for about 30 minutes.
